Commercialising Social Science research for the University of Leeds LSSI

Challenge

The University of Leeds LSSI received funding from the ESRC Commercialising Research out of Social Sciences (CRoSS) scheme, to deliver activities relating to CRoSS. Leeds LSSI commissioned us to deliver a three session training programme, and to develop a resource & guidance document for academics going through the process of commercialising social science research.

Approach

The programme was delivered in five work packages:

  • WP1 Alignment and workshop design: Our dedicated Project Manager Director met with the University team and key academic staff to refine their approach, and align with the goals and current initiatives around Social Sciences research commercialisation.
  • WP2 Session 1: We introduced commercialisation by discussing the different pathways to commercialise IP, and case studies to better understand the process.
  • WP3 Session 2: We co-designed the next session with Dr Kate Pangbourne, Deputy Director of Leeds Institute of Social Sciences (LSSI), where we facilitated a Lego workshop to explore and understand each researcher's opportunity.
  • WP4 Session 3: We worked with academics to create actionable plans for their research ideas, guiding them through the next steps of commercialisation.
  • WP5 Resource & guidance: We co-developed a final resource with Leeds LSSI, including an introduction to commercialisation, the process specific to Social Science research, a case study, and useful tools.

Impact

The in-person programme ran over three days (9 hours total contact time) where 10 participants received a 15-page guidance document. The workshops raised Social Sciences commercialisation awareness and helped engage academics, potentially leading to new disclosures and income stream opportunities from research outcomes.
