Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (ATTP) 3 Block Capability Building Training

Vertical Timeline Layout - GAIN Case Study

Challenge

The Galician Agency for Innovation (GAIN) identified a knowledge exchange and communication skills gap in their research community, which is essential for securing research grants and achieving impactful outcomes.

To address this challenge, GAIN initiated a three-month capacity-building programme focused on three key areas:

  • Knowledge exchange and commercialisation (KEC) fundamentals
  • Communicating research and engaging with stakeholders
  • Understanding the ecosystem, promoting collaboration, and creating impact

Approach

Oxentia developed an online training program, divided into three blocks composed of several half-day modules:

Block 1: Commercialisation Fundamentals

This block introduced the commercialisation process by identifying its main steps and challenges through case studies and delegates’ own projects.

Group exercises helped attendees understand different IP value formats, IP due diligence, determining the best route to market, and assessing technology readiness levels.

Block 2: Communicating Research

In this block, researchers were guided through practical exercises and examples on how to translate complex research findings into content that non-specialist audiences can understand.

At the end of this block, researchers were invited to pitch their research to the group in a 3-minute presentation.

Block 3: Understanding the Ecosystem

This block focused on understanding the support services available in the Galician ecosystem to promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

Participants also built skills in understanding research contracts, collaboration agreements, data laws, and other legal agreements.

This programme was specifically designed to make early-career researchers aware of opportunities in KEC and equip them with the tools to drive innovation in Galicia, a region in Spain that continues to enhance its first-rate KEC communities.

Impact

The programme was delivered to 25 Early Career Researchers from different research groups in Galicia (Spain).

Participants gained a better understanding of how to develop and de-risk their projects in practical ways, collaborate to accelerate their research, and create impact and new opportunities within their innovation ecosystem.

Oxentia's trainer's hands-on approach, followed throughout the three blocks, was commended by participants.
