Creating international business opportunities for Japanese life science startups
Challenge
Japan’s innovation ecosystem is characterised by highly advanced research outcomes, and by funding schemes supporting startups to operate locally. The Mitsubishi Research Institute partnered with Oxentia to develop a programme to attract global investment and to create international business opportunities for Japanese life science startups.
Approach
Oxentia created and delivered an accelerator bootcamp, with training sessions and upskilling workshops addressing the differences and synergies between Japan and other innovation ecosystems. The top ten participants in the programme were selected to pitch their innovations to investors in the UK. Oxentia subsequently organised a pitching and partnering event in London, inviting the ten finalists, venture capitals, and delegates from the local and Japanese governments.
Impact
All participants reported stronger pitching skills thanks to the bootcamp training. New networks and investment opportunities were created at the London event, and some delegates plan to start business operations in the UK. Oxentia continues to provide follow-on support to participants, introducing them to further partnering opportunities and advice on key aspects of the UK innovation ecosystem.
